Let's Talk About...Accessorizing

Greetings!

For the past year, I’ve been promising myself, and others, that I will be sending out a newsletter – well, here it is!

During the 30 plus years that I have been an interior decorator/designer, I have learned so much. I am looking forward to sharing my ‘tips’ with you. I’d love to hear from you, so please do not hesitate to email or call me.

Tip #1 - Hanging Art

Photo
Museums and art galleries use this ‘rule of thumb’ when hanging art – hang the art so that the center of the art is 57” to 60” from the floor.

Tip #2 - Dress Up Nichos

Photo
Paint the back area in a ‘strong’ color. Consider using one of the following decorative accents in the nicho:

- hang framed art or decorative iron piece
- hang a wall sconce with a pillar candle
- place a piece of sculpture in the nicho
- put up glass shelves – add a collection of perfume bottles or small vases

Tip #3 - Think 3

Photo
When placing accessories, place 3 objects together. Consider a bowl, a candleholder and a small pot of ‘silk’ greenery on any surface. On tall pieces of furniture - do the same – and increase the size of the objects and ‘silks’.

Tip #4 - Hang Multiples

Photo
For great impact and interest, hang a row of 3 (or more) pieces of ‘art’ with the same theme. Consider using photos, calendars or cards that are inexpensive and interesting. Purchase ready made matting and frames.

Tip #5 - Create Interest on Your Mantel

Photo
Use unusual objects on your fireplace mantel. For example, antique books and old cameras create an unexpected ‘look’.

Tip #6 - Look Up

Photo
Decorate the space above your windows and doors. Consider:

- hanging art or an architectural piece
- hang plates
- place a shelf with some favored objects and add ‘silk’ greenery
- hand paint or stencil the wall i.e. scrolls or ivy
